Dry Eye
A major problem I have had the last 5 years, and this is a major problem that older women get is Dry Eye. Dry Eye is where the eyes do not make the adequate number of tears to keep the eye moist.
The symptoms for Dry Eye are:
- Dryness
- Watery Eyes
- Itchiness
- Stinging
- Burning
- Irritation
- Grittiness
- Redness
- Blurry Vision
- Feeling like you have something in your eye.
- Fatigue
The causes of Dry Eye are:
- Aging
- Changes in Hormones
- Gender (More common in Women)
- Antihistamines
- Prolonged computer use
- Prolonged Contact lens use
- Reading a lot
- Low Humidity, windy places
The first symptom I noticed was it felt like I had something in my eye. I was going to the Optometrist to have my eyes checked for glasses when they told me my eyes were dry. This doctor prescribed Restasis to relieve my symptoms.
Currently what I notice to let me know that my eyes are dry is the pain first. My eyesight is very bad, hard to see things clearly and distinctly. Occasionally my eyes will start watering also which means it is time for medicine.
Restasis increases the tear production due to inflammation. Restasis come in single use vials and after putting one drop in each eye the vial can be recapped for use later. Restasis is very expensive and a lot of insurance companies do not cover it.
I did use Restasis for a while and it help me. Then one day I realized Restasis was not helping me in fact it was making my eyes worse. When my eyes got worse, I went to an Ophthalmologist at Whitsett Vision Group. I was told by the doctor there that Restasis does not work all the time for older women.
I was prescribed an over the counter Eye Drop called Systane Ultra Lubricant Eye Drop. Systane Ultra drops provides a coating over the surface of your eye and works with your natural tears to give the relief needed.
These drops come in 5ml or 10ml bottles or single use vials. I prefer the vials because they are more sanitary, and the vial can be recapped for later use.
The drops can be purchased through Amazon.
